“Congratulations on getting married. Ryan says Emma is really nice. I hope I can meet her someday.”
Underneath, in smaller handwriting, were the words, “Ryan, I promise I won’t bother you after you get married.”

“Why have I never heard her name?”
Linda exhaled.

He closed his eyes.
“Linda gave you the address.”
“Yes.”
He sat down in the desk chair.
I stayed standing.
“Who is Sophie?”
“My sister.”
“Why does your wife of less than 24 hours have to discover you have a sister by unlocking a secret apartment?”
“It’s complicated.”
“No. Complicated is explaining it. Hiding it was apparently very simple.”
He looked down.
So I waited.
Finally, Ryan started talking.
His father, Thomas, had an affair when Ryan was 19.
