Even at midnight, someone is fueling something, fixing something, guarding something, regretting something.

I built a counter-pattern from memory.

Not a perfect one. Perfect patterns are brittle. I built something uglier, more flexible, something that could bend when the enemy expected it to break. I layered transport routes into fighter defense windows. I used extraction timing as bait. I turned support corridors into false pressure points.

Every time my hand paused over the keyboard, I saw my old team.

Not as they were at the end.

As they had been before.

Laughing over bad coffee. Arguing about call signs. Complaining about the cold. Trading protein bars like currency. One of them taping a postcard from Montana above a console because he said even classified rooms deserved a view.

I remembered their voices more clearly than their faces sometimes.

That scared me.

Faces blur when grief gets old.

Voices stay.

At 0317, Hartman entered without knocking.

“Still here?”

I did not look up.

“Obviously.”

He placed a fresh coffee beside the cold one.

For a few minutes, he said nothing.

That was another reason I respected him.

Finally, he looked at the screen.

“You’re building the enemy a door.”

“I’m building them the door they expect.”

“And behind it?”

“A hallway that goes nowhere.”

Hartman almost smiled.

Almost.

“Can the pilots fly it?”

“Not if they keep trying to be impressive.”

“That may be difficult for them.”

“Then they can be humbled or grounded.”

He nodded as if that were reasonable.

To him, maybe it was.

At 0600, we briefed the revised plan.

By 0800, the pilots hated it.

That told me it had a chance.

Evan stood over the map with his arms crossed.

“You want Blue Air to hold position while Red Air appears to expose the transport corridor?”

“Yes.”

“That makes us look passive.”

“It makes you alive.”

Aiden leaned forward.

“You’re asking F-22 pilots to wait behind a transport window.”

“I’m asking you to stop confusing motion with control.”

His mouth opened, then closed.

Several pilots looked at the map again.

Good.

The plan offended them because it placed value on the thing they had dismissed. Transport timing. Support routes. Extraction corridors. The parts of the mission they had treated as background were now the spine of the defense.

That was not revenge.

But I would be lying if I said it did not taste close.

My father finally spoke from the side wall.

“What happens if they don’t take the bait?”

Every head turned.

He had asked it cleanly.

No contempt.

No accusation.

Just the question.

I looked at him for a moment before answering.

“Then we learn they have changed more than the signal suggests.”

“And if they do?”
