Not because she suddenly wanted bedtime responsibilities or school lunches.

Because losing custody could affect the financial support connected to the children.

During the next two weeks, investigators learned Megan had been receiving child support and other benefits while I covered most groceries, clothing, school supplies, and medical copays. I had also been giving her $900 each month because she claimed she had fallen behind on rent.

Bank records showed she had saved much of the money.

Her Phoenix apartment deposit had already been paid.

So had two airline tickets.

One for Megan. One for Kyle.

There were no tickets for Ava, Noah, Lily, or Ben.

The caregiver authorization was apparently intended to allow me to manage school matters and routine medical decisions once Megan left.

Denise eventually acknowledged that Megan had brought her the document already signed and claimed that I had signed it beforehand.

Denise notarized it without seeing me.
