Three days after my cousin called, Zion pounded on my front door.

When I opened it, he pushed past me.

I’d been using her all along.

“You! You knew from the beginning that my mother would do this.”

I stepped back. “What are you talking about?”

“The house. She left it to you.”

For a second, I couldn’t speak.

“What?”

“Don’t act surprised.” Then something in his expression changed. “You know what? Act dumb if you want. This isn’t about the house. You and Mom were keeping secrets from me, and I’m not leaving until you confess.”

“You knew from the beginning that my mother would do this.”

“Have you lost your mind? The only person who was keeping secrets in our marriage was you.”

“Don’t lie to me.” He raised one finger. “I know she hid something inside that house for you. Where is it?”

For the first time since he’d walked in, he didn’t look angry.

He looked scared.

“Don’t lie to me.”

“Zion, I have no idea what you’re talking about. Why do you even care?”

His jaw tightened.

And suddenly I understood something.

“You’ve been looking for it.”

He didn’t answer.

“You’ve been inside her house.”

“This isn’t about the house.”

“I still have my key. I have every right.”

“No, it doesn’t sound like you do.”

He clenched his jaw so hard I feared he’d break his teeth.

“I’ve spent months contesting that will,” he said. “If I’d won, then I would’ve had every right to enter my own property.”

“But you didn’t win?”

“There!” He pointed at me. “That attitude is exactly the reason I know you planned this.”

“I’ve spent months contesting that will,”

“That’s enough.” I pointed to the door. “Get out.”

He glared at me for a long moment.

“This isn’t the end of it,” he murmured.

Then he walked out, leaving me with two things I hadn’t known that morning.

Valerie had left me her house.
