“Do you think he needs to see them?”
She appeared in the doorway. “Did you find Alice’s things?”
“I found something.” I held the items close. “Can I take them with me when I go to see Archie?”
Her expression changed. “Do you think he needs to see them?”
“I do.”
“Then take them.” She glanced at my hands but didn’t ask what they showed. “And if you want me there, I’ll come with you.”
“From the same lab?”
“I’d like that.”
She reached for my arm. “Whatever you found, you don’t have to figure it out alone.”
Before I could answer, my phone beeped.
Archie had texted that his result had arrived and he wanted to talk. Grandma came with me, carrying one twin while I held the other. Archie opened the door but didn’t step aside.
“Did you get the results?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“You can open it.”
“From the same lab?”
I looked at him. “You asked me to come here so you could talk. Is this what you wanted to ask?”
He moved aside. “I just want to know what I’m looking at.”
Inside, I placed the envelope on the table. He didn’t touch it.
“You can open it,” I said.
“What if you switched the papers?”
“That’s what it says.”
Grandma gave a sharp, disbelieving laugh. “You think she forged a paternity test?”
“I’m asking a question.”
“No,” I said. “You’re looking for another reason not to believe me.”
He opened the envelope and pulled out the report. His eyes moved over the page, then stopped.
“It says I’m the father,” he said.
“That’s what it says.”
“I didn’t know what to think.”
“How do I know this is the original?”
I frowned. “You got your own result, Archie. You can compare them.”
