“This isn’t a bargain, Richard. You don’t earn me by taking the kids to school. They’re your children. You should know them whether I stay or leave.”

For once, he didn’t argue.

Over the following weeks, I stopped carrying every part of his relationship with the children for him.

I watched what he did when nobody applauded.

Tuesday and Thursday school runs became his. So did Sam’s music lesson, Lily’s reading homework, two dinners each week, and some of the appointments he had spent years assuming I would handle.

One evening, I passed Lily’s room and heard her stumble over the same word during reading practice.

Richard snapped, “Focus.”

Lily went quiet.

Then Richard stopped himself.

There was a pause.

Nobody was taking pictures.

His voice came back softer.

“Sorry. Let’s try it again.”

She did.
