I met with my solicitor and reorganized my affairs.

No more informal access.

No more promises over Sunday lunch.

No more bills arriving at my house for a life being lived somewhere else.

For my granddaughter, I arranged a separate education fund that could pay approved school costs directly. Wesley could not withdraw from it. Serena could not put household expenses through it. I could contribute when I wished, and I could stop when I wished.

When Wesley learned what I had done, he was furious for almost a day.

Then he became quiet.

Three weeks after the canceled dinner, he came to my house alone.

He stood beside the same kitchen table where I had read his message at 6:18 p.m.

He looked older.

“We’re cutting everything,” he said.

He listed the things as if reporting casualties.

The club membership was gone. One car was being sold. Serena had canceled household services. They were trying to restructure the business debt. He had taken on extra client work. They had met with a mortgage adviser.

“Good,” I said.

His jaw tightened. “You don’t have to sound pleased.”

“I’m not pleased. I’m listening.”

He sat down.

For the first time in years, Wesley showed me a household budget.

It explained more than any apology could.

Their life had not merely been helped by my money. It had been designed around the assumption that my money would continue.

Without me, the numbers did not balance.

“We may have to sell,” he said.

I thought of the glossy townhouse brochure that had sat beside Arthur’s pearls.

“Then perhaps you have to sell.”

He covered his face with both hands.

For one dangerous moment, I nearly returned to the old role.

I nearly told him I could cover six months. I nearly decided that a final rescue could be different from all the others.

Then Wesley lowered his hands.

“I am sorry about the dinner,” he said.

It was the first apology he had offered without attaching a request to the same sentence.

I let myself believe it.
