I answered the thirteenth.
“Please,” he said. There was no anger left in his voice. “Don’t do this.”
“I’m not doing anything now. I already did it.”
“We can fire Madison.”
“That was one of the choices you had last night.”
“I made a mistake.”
“You made hundreds of them. Most were just small enough for you to call them jokes.”
He went silent.
I filed for divorce that afternoon.
Daniel’s family tried everything afterward.
His mother sent messages accusing me of destroying generations of work.
His father offered my parents money for “the misunderstanding.”
Madison threatened to sue until her own attorney reviewed the audit and advised her to stop contacting me.
Then the deeper problems surfaced.
Investigators discovered that Madison had not acted alone.
Daniel’s father had approved several fake vendor payments to cover personal debts, assuming the company would recover before anyone examined the transactions closely.
The bank agreed to restructure the loan only after the board removed him from financial control and Daniel resigned as CEO.
Madison was charged with felony theft and falsifying business records.
She eventually accepted a plea agreement requiring restitution and probation.
Daniel continued begging me to withdraw the divorce.
At mediation, he leaned across the table with red eyes.
“I lost my company. My family hates me. Isn’t that enough?”
I studied the man I had once loved.
“No,” I said softly. “Because you still think this is about punishment.”
He swallowed.
For once, I no longer needed him to understand.
I only needed him to hear the answer.
“It’s about consequences.”
