My father, moving stiffly!

“The stupid boy swerved harder than I thought, Sylvia!” my father shouted.

I couldn’t breathe.

Terry had clipped his phone to the dash with a voice memo app running that morning. He liked recording himself singing on drives. It kept running after the crash, close enough to catch every word my father said while standing over the ditch.

“He wouldn’t take the money, Sylvia. He wouldn’t take it, and now look…”

“The stupid boy swerved harder than I thought!”

“I’ll call an ambulance. Wait. Just… wait a minute. Let me think,” my father said on the call.

Terry stopped the recording, watching my face.

“You finally saw it for yourself,” he said.

I couldn’t answer. My throat wouldn’t work.

He wheeled closer and took my hand.

“I’ll call an ambulance.”

“Your parents came to me three weeks before prom, Chloe. At the diner where I worked weekends. Your dad slid an envelope across the table.”

“How much?” I whispered.

“Twenty thousand. They said you were headed for an Ivy League school, that I was ‘small-town baggage.’ They said I’d hold you back forever.”

“And you said no?”

“Of course. So they followed me the day I picked up my suit. Your dad told me later at the hospital that it was supposed to be a scare. Just enough to shake me up.”

“Your dad slid an envelope across the table.”

I felt my body go cold.

“When the first time didn’t work, he followed me again, and your mother told him I was coming to you, hence the second attempt. After the accident,” Terry continued, “they came to the hospital. Not to apologize. To warn me.”

I gasped and covered my mouth.

“He followed me again.”

“Your father said if I ever told you, they’d cut off your college fund, burn down the bakery my mom had just mortgaged the house to open, and make sure the whole town knew a version of the story where I was the drunk driver.”

“For five years?” My voice cracked. “You carried this alone for five years?”

I felt my body go cold.

“I couldn’t take your family from you, babe. I couldn’t take your future from you. I thought silence was love.”

I pushed away from the desk and grabbed my phone.

My hands were still shaking, but it was a different kind of shaking now. I dialed my mother.

She picked up on the second ring, cheerful as always.

“Sweetheart, how was the anniversary dinner?”

“I know what you did.”

“I thought silence was love.”
