“Is that him?”

I nodded.

She held out her hand.

I hesitated.

Every instinct I had as her mother was screaming at me to handle it.

Sloan held her hand out to me again.

“Mom.”

I gave her the phone.

“Santiago?”

His voice became louder immediately.

“Sloan, you can’t just tell me the day of the event that you’re not showing up.”

“I told you I wasn’t working again until you paid me.”

“I’ve already explained that I’ll take care of you.”

“You’ve said that six times.”

“I have expenses I need to take care of.”

“So do I.”

“You’re 16.”

Sloan glanced at me.

Silence.

Sloan opened her spreadsheet.

“You said you’d pay me June 14. Then June 21. Then July 5. Then July 31. Then August 9. Then you said the end of summer.”

Santiago interrupted her.

“I don’t need you reading my texts back to me.”

“Okay.”

Her voice stayed maddeningly calm. “So when are you paying me?”

“After work today.”

“No.”

“You’ll get your money.”
