Her eyes widened.

Max looked at her.

She looked at him.

For several seconds, nobody said anything.

Then Lily whispered:

“You came.”

Max nodded.

“Yes.”

She walked slowly toward him.

“You’re my father.”

He took a breath.

“I understand why you might believe that.”

“But are you?”

“No.”

The word was gentle.

But it broke something inside her.

The Truth Was Simpler Than She Expected

Max didn’t try to dismiss her feelings.

He didn’t laugh.

He didn’t tell her she was being ridiculous.

Instead, he sat down.

“I understand why you saw the resemblance,” he said.

“And I understand why you wanted answers.”

Lily looked at him.

“But I’ve never met your mother.”

He looked at me.

“I didn’t know you existed.”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“But we look alike.”

“Yes,” he said.

“People can look remarkably similar without being related.”

She stared at him.

“So you’re saying I’m wrong?”

“I’m saying that resemblance isn’t proof of biological parentage.”

She looked at me.

For the first time, I saw something change in her expression.

The anger was still there.

But beneath it was uncertainty.

She had built an entire story around a resemblance.

And now the person at the center of that story was telling her it wasn’t true.

The Question Lily Finally Asked

After a long silence, Lily asked:

“Why didn’t my mom tell me more?”

I looked at her.

Because that was the question I had been avoiding for fifteen years.

“I was afraid,” I said.

She frowned.

“Afraid of what?”

“That you would grow up believing your father didn’t want you.”

I swallowed.

“And I didn’t know how to explain everything without reopening wounds I was trying to heal.”

She looked down.

“So you decided for me.”

“Yes.”

It was difficult to admit.

“But I thought I was protecting you.”

She was silent.

“I should have told you more as you got older.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I just wanted to know where I came from.”

“I know.”

“I thought maybe he left because of me.”

I immediately shook my head.

“No.”

She looked at me.

“Never think that.”

I walked toward her.

“Nothing that happened between your father and me was your fault.”

She finally began to cry.

And this time, I didn’t try to stop her.

I simply held her.

What Remained After the Truth

Max stayed for a little while.

He spoke with Lily about the dangers of people impersonating celebrities online.

He explained that genuine representatives would never ask a teenager to send money privately in exchange for a secret DNA test.

He encouraged her to tell an adult whenever someone online made a request that felt secretive or uncomfortable.

Before leaving, he looked at Lily.

“I hope you find the answers you’re looking for.”

She nodded.

“I’m sorry I thought you were my father.”

“You don’t need to apologize.”

He smiled gently.

“Curiosity isn’t something you should be ashamed of.”

Then he left.

The car disappeared down the street.
