Paul nodded toward the video. “And sometime after that, the marker disappeared.”
She looked at me.
“This is ridiculous.”
“You cut down my mother’s garden because it showed where the old boundary had always been.”
“They were plants.”
“Then why remove the marker first?”
Whitney said nothing.
Paul unfolded the site plan again.
“Because her driveway needs this strip.”
He pointed to the line running through my flower bed.
“Without these extra feet, the design doesn’t fit the way it’s drawn.”
I looked from the plan to the bare stems beside the fence.
The flowers hadn’t prevented Whitney from building anything.
They had made it obvious where she was trying to build.
Whitney snapped, “That’s not your business.”
“It literally is.”
That was the moment everything clicked.
Whitney had not simply wanted a wider driveway.
Whitney had submitted a design that depended on several feet of land she had already been warned might not belong to her.
The marker was the real problem.
The flower bed was the visible one.
It had followed the same line for years, and anyone looking at the yard would immediately ask why an established garden suddenly ended up beneath Whitney’s proposed driveway.
So she removed the marker first.
Then she cleared everything above ground that made the old boundary obvious.
She hadn’t been trying to make my garden prettier.
