“I’m not going inside because your family needs to learn who I am. I’m going in because there’s someone I need to speak with.”

Then he asked,

“Do you want me to keep it quiet? I can stay near the edges.”

I looked at the wine stain on my dress.

At the table.

At the catering bins.

Then through the glass at my mother and sister.

She stood near the cake table staring at Daniel.

Her expression changed from confusion to recognition.

Then calculation.

Preston walked toward Daniel and Hartley.

Several other guests followed.

Finally, my mother came outside.

She approached the little table beside the catering bins.

The rain.
