An Heir Nobody Was Supposed to Find
The floor seemed to disappear beneath me.
“Because your daughter is not just Rose Bennett’s granddaughter,” Adrian said. “Your mother had a child before she disappeared. She was already pregnant when the accident happened. Everyone believed she’d lost the baby.”
“But I’m here,” I said.
“Yes. And that’s why Celeste is terrified.”
Eleanor’s voice, when it came, was quiet and shaking. “Rose was my oldest child.”
I felt the room tilt. “Which means—”
“Which means your daughter,” Adrian finished, “is the last direct descendant of the original Vale bloodline.”
The ballroom erupted into whispers. Phones lifted again. The same guests who’d laughed at my daughter twenty minutes earlier were now staring at her like she was royalty — and I hated every second of it. Money had turned a poor little girl in a borrowed dress into someone important, and nothing about her had changed except what people were willing to see.
I stepped in front of Lucia. “I don’t care about your family name. I don’t care about your money.” I looked around the room. “And I don’t want my daughter growing up thinking people only respect her because of who her grandmother was.”
Adrian lowered his head. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry you carried that alone. I’m sorry my family’s mistakes followed you.”
That apology hurt more than anger would have — because it was real.
“You Still Don’t Know Who Lucia’s Father Is”
Then Celeste laughed, sharp and broken. “You’re all acting like she’s innocent. She isn’t.” She turned to Adrian. “Tell them why Rose Bennett really ran away. Tell them what your grandfather did.”
Eleanor closed her eyes. “Stop.”
But Celeste wasn’t trying to protect herself anymore — she was trying to burn everything down with her. “Tell them that Rose wasn’t just hidden. She was erased.”
“What is she talking about?” I asked Adrian. He looked away, and that was when I knew there was another secret, a bigger one, still buried.
Eleanor finally spoke. “Your grandfather wanted Rose to marry someone else — a man from another powerful family. When she refused, he threatened to take everything from her.”
“My mother had nothing,” I said.
“She had something,” Adrian said quietly, looking at Lucia. “She had a child. And your mother was already pregnant when she disappeared.”
Everything blurred. “Then how—”
“Because after the accident, everyone believed she’d lost the baby.”
“But I’m here,” I said again, quieter this time.
