“Because after your parents died, you kept calling me Uncle Samuel. I never corrected you.”

I wanted to be angry.

Part of me was.

But before I could speak, the temporary phone Dana had given me began ringing.

Blocked number.

I answered.

Static.

Then a man’s voice.

Older.

Rough.

“Birdie?”

The compass fell from my hand.

My knees almost gave way.

Samuel reached for me, but I stepped back.

“Caleb?”

The man inhaled sharply.

“Yes.”

I cried before I could stop myself.

“Where are you?”

“Close enough.”

“Why did you disappear?”

“No time.”

“You’ve had twenty-five years!”

“I know.”

Pain filled those two words.

Then his voice changed.

“Listen carefully. Do not let Samuel take you to the coordinates written beneath the compass.”

I unfolded the note.

I had missed the numbers at the bottom.

“What is there?”

Silence.

Then Caleb answered.

“That’s where he buried your father.”

The call ended.

PART 5 — WHAT WE FOUND BENEATH THE STONE

Samuel did not defend himself.

That frightened me more than denial would have.

“Is my father buried there?”

“Yes.”

My mouth went dry.

“Why?”

“Because the official burial site is not where Andrew Rowan’s remains were ultimately placed.”

I stared at him.

“You moved my father’s body?”

“His ashes.”

“Without telling me?”

“You were a child.”

“Stop saying that!”

My voice echoed through the boathouse.

For the first time in my life, Samuel flinched.

I pressed my hands to my stomach.

“You built my entire life out of truths you decided I wasn’t ready to hear.”

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

No excuse.

No courtroom language.

Just yes.

The coordinates led to an old family cemetery on property once owned by my mother.

We did not go alone.

Officer Torres came.

So did Samuel’s attorney.

Two security officers accompanied us.

I insisted.

If the last twenty-four hours had taught me anything, it was that secrecy had done enough damage.

Snow covered the cemetery.

At the far end stood a simple stone marked ANDREW ROWAN.

My father.

Not the public grave I had visited every year.

This one.

The real one.

I could barely walk toward it.

Then a man stepped from behind the chapel.

Samuel froze.

The man had white in his beard and deep lines around his eyes, but I recognized him before I understood how.

The way he tilted his head.

The compass hanging against his coat.

“Birdie.”

Caleb.

My brother.

I wanted to run to him.

I also wanted to slap him.

Instead, I stood still and cried.

“You left me.”

“I did.”

“You were twenty-one.”

“Yes.”

“I was six.”

His eyes filled.

“I know.”

“Then explain it.”

Caleb looked at Samuel.

“The people behind Lighthouse needed two things. The missing archive and control of your mother’s shares. I thought if I disappeared, they would chase me instead of you.”

“They did chase you?”

“For years.”

“Why not come back?”

“Because by the time I realized Samuel had protected you, I was already wanted for financial crimes I could not prove I hadn’t committed.”

Samuel said quietly, “I tried to clear your name.”

“You also buried everything.”

“To keep Natalie alive.”

Caleb laughed bitterly.

“And how did that work out?”

I stepped between them.

“No more conversations about me as if I’m six years old.”

Both men stopped.

“Why is my father here?”

Samuel walked to the headstone.

“Because he asked for this place.”

“He asked you?”

“In a document inside the black case.”

Behind the headstone was a metal plate hidden beneath frozen leaves.

With Officer Torres watching, the security officer removed it.
