On a bitter December night, my daughter appeared at my door holding my drenched three-year-old granddaughter. “He brought his mistress into the house,” she whispered. “Then his mother packed our things and locked us outside.” I picked up my keys, looked at her, and said, “Get in the car. They chose the wrong family to mess with.”

“You need to leave.”

I held up the certified lien document.

“No. You need to explain why a legal homeowner and a three-year-old child were locked outside a property securing eighty-two thousand dollars of my money.”

Daniel appeared behind his mother and immediately told me to stay out of his marriage.

“I was staying out of it until you left my granddaughter in the rain.”
