Something about that word bothered me.
But I had bigger questions.
“Inside. Now.”
Something about that word bothered me. But I had bigger questions.

The guest room looked completely different when I knew what I was looking at.
A small carrier sat near the wall.
Bottles.
Formula.
A digital kitchen scale.
Old towels.
A heating pad under half of a shallow box.
Printed instructions with the name of a local animal rescue at the top.
The guest room looked completely different when I knew what I was looking at.
I slowly turned toward Greg.
“How long?”
“I’ve never brought any home before,” he admitted. “The other nights, I took late feeding shifts at the rescue and slept here afterward so I wouldn’t wake you.”
“That’s not what I asked, Greg.”
“The other nights, I took late feeding shifts at the rescue and slept here afterward so I wouldn’t wake you.”
He looked down.
“I’ve been volunteering there about six months. The overnight shifts started three weeks ago.”
Six months.
I couldn’t believe it.
“What do you do?”
“Whatever they need. Supply runs. Cleaning. Transport. Sometimes feeding.”
“For six months?”
He nodded.
“I’ve been volunteering there about six months. The overnight shifts started three weeks ago.”
“And you never once thought to tell me?”
Greg rubbed the back of his neck.
“At first, I didn’t think it mattered.”
“And later?”
His hand dropped.
“Later it felt strange that I hadn’t told you.”
“And you never once thought to tell me?”
I looked around the room.
“You are bottle-feeding a kitten named Susan at two in the morning using our son’s baby blanket.”
“She’s actually very responsive to Susan.”
“Greg.”
“You are bottle-feeding a kitten named Susan at two in the morning using our son’s baby blanket.”
He sighed.
“I found the litter behind our shed yesterday and called the rescue. They told me to watch from a distance to see whether the mother returned. She didn’t. When the temperature dropped and the kittens grew distressed, the rescue told me to bring them inside. I got Susan first, but Steve crawled deeper beneath the garden edging.”
“They told me to watch from a distance to see whether the mother returned. She didn’t.”
“Steve?”
He pointed at the box. “Susan’s sibling.”
“So you volunteered our house?”
“Temporarily.”
“And our guest room.”
“Also temporarily.”
“And our bed?”
He glanced toward the ceiling.
