“What did you notice?” I asked.
She swallowed hard.
“The hat.”
Caleb looked confused.
“What hat?”
“My mom knitted a pink cap for her. The nurses put it on right after she was born.” She gestured toward the infant her husband was holding. “When they brought her back, she had a hospital cap instead.”
“I thought maybe I remembered wrong.”
Her husband dropped his gaze.
“I told her someone probably changed it.”
“I thought I was exhausted,” Marissa said. “I thought maybe I remembered wrong.”
Caleb rose to his feet.
“Can I ask you something?”
Marissa nodded.
Her husband’s grip tightened around the bundled baby.
“Can you check her left shoulder?”

Nobody moved at first.
Then Marissa slowly eased the blanket away.
Beside the baby’s left collarbone was a small dark oval.
Caleb made a noise somewhere between a laugh and a sob.
Every part of me wanted to reach out for that baby.
“There.”
