“And I’m never making fun of Caleb for staring at weird birthmarks.”

“Excuse me,” he said. “I have excellent observational skills.”

Marissa’s husband actually managed to smile.

Before leaving, we took one photograph.

Yesterday, she sent me a picture from her daughter’s birthday.

Caleb had spotted a birthmark. Marissa had noticed a missing hat.

Both details had seemed far too small to mean anything.

Both mattered because someone decided not to dismiss them.

Our daughters are nearly one year old now.

We don’t spend much time with Marissa and her husband, but we have remained in contact.

I laughed much harder than I expected to.
