That was about as close as either of us got to acknowledging that we believed this baby might truly make it.

Yesterday morning, I woke Caleb at 5:12 and said, “I think it’s happening.”

He immediately sat upright.

“I’ve been having contractions for two hours.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’ve been having contractions for two hours.”

“You waited two hours?”

“I wanted to be sure.”

He just stared at me.

Then he began putting on two different shoes.

Caleb remained beside my shoulder, looking both terrified and amazed.

I actually laughed.

It was the first time in months that either of us had laughed about anything connected to the pregnancy.

The hospital was crowded when we got there.

Caleb stayed beside me the entire time.

Around midnight, everything suddenly moved quickly.

More nurses entered the room. The doctor kept calling out instructions. Caleb remained beside my shoulder, looking both terrified and amazed.

For several seconds, I couldn’t say anything.

Then I heard someone crying.

It wasn’t me.
