Caleb returned to my bedside while our daughter was taken to the nearby newborn assessment area to finish her routine examinations.

“Hopefully not. I was bald by thirty.”

I smiled at him.

When I opened my eyes again, a nurse I didn’t recognize was walking in with a bundled infant in her arms.

“There she is,” she said.

“Want to hold your daughter?”

As Caleb repositioned her, the blanket loosened and exposed the top of one shoulder.

For one perfect second, he was smiling.

I watched as he gazed down at her.
