He dragged both hands over his face.
“What if I’m wrong?”
I stared down at the sleeping baby.
“I hope you are.”
I hated that a part of me was suddenly frightened to hold her too tightly.
“I stared right at it.”
“I know.”
“The nurse saw it too.”
“I know.”
The baby gave a tiny squeak and nestled her chin against my chest.

Then Denise turned toward the delivery nurse.
Several minutes later, the charge nurse arrived along with the nurse who had been present during the delivery.
The charge nurse introduced herself as Denise.
“Tell me what happened.”
Caleb explained everything.
He told her what the birthmark looked like and exactly where he’d seen it.
Then Denise turned toward the delivery nurse.
The woman glanced from Caleb over to me.
“Do you remember the mark?”

It felt as if my heart stopped beating.
“Where was it?” Denise asked.
“Left side. Near the collarbone.”
For a moment, nobody said anything.
“Did she leave this room?”
Denise examined the band without taking it off and then reviewed the information in the chart.
