Choosing My Own Future

Madeline and I ended our marriage quietly.

There was no public fight.

No dramatic accusations.

The truth was painful enough.

At our final meeting, she handed me the signed papers.

“I’m sorry,” I told her.

She smiled sadly.

“I’m not.”

I looked surprised.

She explained.

“I spent my entire life becoming the person my parents wanted me to be. The perfect daughter. The perfect wife. The perfect image.”

She looked at the papers.

“Maybe we both needed something powerful enough to make us finally choose ourselves.”

“Everything I did was for you,” he said.

I was standing outside Jenna’s townhouse.

Maisie was drawing with sidewalk chalk on the driveway.

“No, Dad.”

I watched her carefully color a purple house.

“Everything you did was for the future you wanted me to have.”

There was silence.

“Isn’t that the same thing?”

I looked at my daughter.

“No.”

I smiled slightly.

“There’s a difference now.”
