Then I looked at him.

“Grandpa?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Will you come to prom with me?”

He smiled.

Then his expression changed.

His eyes dropped toward his wheelchair.

For the first time, I saw uncertainty in his face.

“I don’t want to embarrass you,” he said quietly.

I immediately crouched beside him.

“You could never embarrass me.”

He looked at me.

I took his hand.

“You carried me out of a burning house.”

I smiled.

“I think you’ve earned one dance.”

His eyes became glossy.

Then he nodded.

The Night of Prom

Prom night finally arrived.

The school gym looked completely different.

String lights hung from the ceiling.

Tables were covered with decorations.

Flowers were placed around the room.

Music played through the speakers.

I wore a deep blue dress that I had altered myself.

Grandpa wore his navy suit.

I even helped him choose a pocket square.

He looked incredible.

As I pushed his wheelchair through the doors, I could feel people looking at us.

Some were surprised.

Others smiled.

A few whispered.

But I didn’t care.

I was proud to be there with him.

We had barely been inside for two minutes when Amber and several of her friends approached.

She looked at Grandpa.

Then she looked at me.

“Wow,” she said loudly.

“Did the nursing home lose a patient?”

A few people nearby laughed nervously.
