“One afternoon, some boys from your school came in,” Elizabeth went on. “They laughed when they saw your uniform.”
His hand stopped moving.
“They laughed when they saw your uniform.”
“You locked yourself in the stockroom afterward,” Elizabeth recalled. “And you told me, ‘Nobody is ever going to look down on me like that again.'”
Alan stared at the badge.
“I kept that promise.”
Elizabeth nodded toward the broken plate beside my feet.
“Did you?”
“I kept that promise.”
Nothing moved for several seconds.
Then Alan looked at me.
I expected another excuse.
Instead, he said, “I worked for everything I have.”

“So did I,” I replied.
He blinked.
“I didn’t mean…”
“You didn’t know anything about me,” I said, holding his gaze without blinking.
“I know.”
I expected another excuse.
“No, you know now because she embarrassed you.”
He turned pale.
I pointed toward the broken plate.
“You weren’t sorry when it was just me standing here.”
Alan reached for his wallet.
“Put it away,” I said.
“I’m trying to make this right.”
“Then apologize.”
“Put it away.”
His hand stayed inside his jacket for a moment before he slowly withdrew it empty.
“I’m sorry,” he muttered.
