The second disappeared into my curls.
By the time another handful came sailing over the back of my seat, I knew I would be finding buttery kernels in my hair for the rest of the night.
I have thick, curly hair.
Popcorn doesn’t simply fall out of hair like mine.
It moves in permanently.
On the giant screen, Spider-Man was swinging between buildings while hundreds of people cheered.
Behind me, a nine-year-old boy was laughing at the top of his lungs.
Beside me, my husband Owen stared at the side of my head.
He reached over and carefully pulled a piece of popcorn from my curls.
He held it between two fingers.
Then he looked at me.
Something changed in his face.
I had never seen that expression before.
He placed the popcorn on the armrest as carefully as though it were evidence.
“Stay here,” he said.
Then he stood and walked out of the theater.
I stared after him.
Owen did not confront people.
Owen did not complain.
Owen would rather endure almost anything than risk making another person uncomfortable.
Four minutes later, he returned.
And he wasn’t alone.
But to understand why those four minutes mattered so much, you have to understand my husband.
And what it had taken for us to get inside that theater at all.
Owen is thirty-eight years old and one of the gentlest people I have ever known.
I don’t mean weak.
He’s six-foot-two, works construction, and can carry a sheet of drywall up a staircase by himself.
But he avoids confrontation almost instinctively.
On our third date, he ordered a medium-rare steak.
It arrived completely overcooked.
He looked disappointed for half a second.
Then he ate every bite.
“Your steak is wrong,” I whispered.
“It’s fine.”
“It’s practically gray.”
“It’s still good.”
When the waiter asked whether everything was okay, Owen smiled.
“Perfect. Thanks.”
After the waiter walked away, I stared at him.
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
He shrugged.
“It wasn’t worth making a problem.”
At first, I thought it was sweet.
It took me nearly two years to realize it wasn’t really kindness.
It was fear.
During our eight years of marriage, I watched Owen accept the wrong drive-through order more times than I could count.
He paid for an unnecessary car repair rather than challenge the mechanic.
He loaned his sister Lisa two thousand dollars even though both of us knew she probably wouldn’t repay it.
When our neighbor built a fence several feet onto our property, Owen looked at it and said,
“Well… at least it’s a nice fence.”
When his boss promoted someone with six months of experience instead of Owen, who had been doing the job for years, he said,
“Maybe the guy needed the opportunity more.”
Whenever someone raised their voice, Owen became quiet.
His shoulders stiffened.
His thumb rubbed repeatedly against the side of his finger.
One night, I finally asked him about it.
“Why do you let people walk over you?”
He stared at the ceiling.
“Because the alternative is worse.”
“What alternative?”
He looked at me.
For a moment, I saw something old and frightened behind his eyes.
“Becoming my father.”
Then he rolled over and turned off the light.
I had met his father, Frank, only a handful of times before Owen and I married.
Frank was a large man.
Louder than everyone around him.
His temper could change the atmosphere of a room instantly.
At one barbecue, he shouted at a grill because the charcoal wouldn’t light.
At a restaurant, he berated a waitress because his coffee wasn’t hot enough.
