But not that afternoon.
He looked angry.
He opened Robert’s door.
“Where have you been?”
Robert slowly turned toward him.
“Running an errand.”
Daniel looked past him at me.
“What kind of errand?”
Robert smiled faintly.
“A personal one.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Dad, we’ve been waiting for two hours.”
Melissa appeared behind him in the doorway.
And she wasn’t alone.
A man wearing a gray suit stood beside her with a leather portfolio.
Robert leaned toward me.
“That isn’t Franklin.”
Daniel bent toward the SUV.
“Come inside, Dad. Mr. Keller has documents we need to finish today.”
Robert stared at him.
“What documents?”
Daniel hesitated.
Only half a second.
But Robert noticed.
So did I.
“Estate planning.”
Robert slowly unfastened his seatbelt.
“Excellent.”
I helped him out of the SUV.
“Then let’s discuss my money first.”
Daniel froze.
The silence in the driveway lasted only a few seconds.
But everything changed during it.
Daniel recovered first.
“What money?”
Robert leaned against the SUV while I steadied him.
“The ninety-one thousand five hundred dollars you removed from my investment account.”
Melissa’s face immediately lost color.
Tyler looked genuinely confused.
Daniel gave a short laugh.
“Dad, we already discussed that.”
“No, we didn’t.”
“Yes, we did. Before your surgery.”
Robert stared directly at him.
“Then tell me where we were when I supposedly gave you permission.”
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
