Robert continued.

“The kitchen?”

Silence.

“My office?”

Nothing.

“The hospital?”

Daniel shifted.

“On the phone?”

“Dad, you’re tired.”

“Where?”

Melissa stepped forward.

“Maybe we should all go inside.”

Robert looked at her.

“That’s the first sensible thing anyone has said.”

Inside the living room, the stranger introduced himself as Gregory Keller, an estate attorney from Independence.

Keller looked increasingly uncomfortable as Robert settled into his recliner.

Daniel remained standing.

Melissa sat near the fireplace.

Tyler stayed close to the doorway, looking like he desperately wanted to be somewhere else.

I sat beside Robert.

Keller opened the portfolio.

“Mr. Harrison, your son informed me that you wanted to make several changes to your trust and financial arrangements.”

Robert nodded.

“Show me.”

Keller placed several documents in front of him.

The first immediately appointed Daniel as successor trustee instead of waiting until Robert died or became incapable of handling his own affairs.

The second transferred Robert’s lake house near Lake of the Ozarks into an LLC jointly controlled by Daniel and Melissa.

The third gave Daniel authority to sell several pieces of commercial property Robert had owned for decades.

The fourth granted Daniel broad control over Robert’s banking and investment decisions.

Robert read every page.

Slowly.

Nobody interrupted him.

Finally, he looked at Keller.

“Who told you to prepare these?”

Keller glanced toward Daniel.

“Your son contacted my office.”

“But who told you these changes represented my wishes?”

“Daniel told me the family had already discussed them.”

Robert turned toward his son.
