“You told an attorney you were speaking for me?”
Daniel crossed his arms.
“Dad, stop making this so dramatic.”
Something in Robert finally snapped.
“Dramatic?”
For the first time, his voice rose.
“I spent nine days in a hospital while you removed nearly one hundred thousand dollars from my account.”
“It wasn’t stolen.”
“What do you call taking money without permission?”
“I borrowed it.”
Melissa quickly interrupted.
“Daniel intended to put it back.”
Robert slowly turned toward her.
“So you knew.”
Melissa froze.
Daniel snapped,
“Melissa.”
Too late.
Something changed in Robert’s face.
Until then, I think some part of him had still hoped Melissa wasn’t involved.
“You knew,” he repeated.
She stared at the floor.
“Dad, Daniel was about to lose his company.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“He has employees. Families depend on him.”
“Did you know he took my money?”
Finally, Melissa whispered,
“Yes.”
Robert turned toward Tyler.
“And you?”
Tyler raised his hands.
“I don’t know anything about the money. Dad just said Grandpa was changing the estate plan.”
“Changing it how?”
Tyler hesitated.
Daniel immediately cut in.
“Don’t answer that.”
Robert looked at his grandson.
“Answer me.”
Tyler glanced at Daniel.
Then back at Robert.
“He said you were giving him control because you couldn’t manage everything anymore.”
Robert nodded slowly.
“And what were you getting?”
Tyler’s face reddened.
“A job.”
Daniel muttered something under his breath.
