Daniel’s face reddened.
“What did you do?”
Robert almost looked amused.
“I revoked your power of attorney.”
Daniel stared.
“And Franklin contacted the bank.”
“You can’t—”
“I already did.”
Daniel stepped toward Robert.

Daniel pointed toward his father.
“You’re going to destroy my business over a misunderstanding?”
“You took ninety-one thousand five hundred dollars.”
“I told you. It was temporary.”
“You misled my financial adviser.”
“I was saving my company.”
“With my retirement money.”
“I would have paid it back.”

Daniel said nothing.
Robert continued.
“Next month?”
Silence.
“Next year?”
Nothing.
“After you sold my land?”
Melissa started crying.
“Dad, please. Nobody wanted to hurt you.”
Robert looked at her.
“You wanted my lake house.”
“No.”
“It’s in the document.”
“Daniel suggested it.”
“And you agreed.”
“I thought you wanted us to have it eventually.”
Robert’s voice became softer.
“Eventually is different from while I’m still alive.”
Melissa had no answer.
