“And what did you say?”
Nolan rubbed his palms over his jeans.
“I said I would.”
“You said yes.”
“It wasn’t final.”
“But you answered her before talking to me. Before talking to your wife, Nolan.”
His face tightened.
“It was hypothetical, Ayla. Nothing is going to happen to Madison.”
“I said I would.”
“Then why did she ask when you’re going to tell me?”
“Because she thought I would’ve spoken to you already.”
“But you didn’t.”
“You didn’t promise to drive her to an appointment, Nolan. You told her you’d consider becoming responsible for her child.”
“I know.”
“Then why did she ask when you’re going to tell me?”
“No. You knew enough to keep it from me.”
He looked down.
“I was trying to make her feel less alone.”
“And somehow that meant making a decision that could affect our whole marriage without me in the room. Did you ever talk to Madison about what kind of father you’d be?”
Nolan’s face changed.
“You knew enough to keep it from me.”
“She asked if I was scared about becoming a dad. I told her I was and that I hoped I’d be good at it.”
I pushed my chair back.
“You discussed becoming a father with her before you ever discussed that fear with me.”
“Ayla…”
“I’m going to talk to Madison.”
