“You used a child to carry a message you were too ashamed to say to me yourself.”
“I shouldn’t have.”
“No. You shouldn’t have.”
He started talking about the mortgage again.
I hung up.
That was the collapse I needed.
Until then, part of me still believed the old arrangement could be repaired with better limits. After that call, I understood that limits meant nothing unless I was willing to let Wesley be angry about them.
I stopped negotiating.
Two months later, the townhouse went on the market.
Serena did not call me to complain. Wesley did not ask me to stop the sale.
They sold one vehicle first. Then they sold furniture that did not fit the smaller rental they had chosen. Serena increased her hours. Wesley closed one part of his business that had never been profitable and arranged a repayment plan for the remaining commercial debt.
The bank eventually resolved the card dispute. Some charges were returned. Others were not. I accepted that because the larger recovery had already happened: nobody but me could use that account anymore.
Wesley also agreed in writing to repay the business charges that remained my loss.
The first transfer was small.
I almost cried when I saw it.
Not because I needed the amount.
Because for once, money was moving in the other direction.
Serena came to see me again shortly before they moved.
This time she brought no argument.
“I was cruel to you,” she said. “I told myself I only wanted boundaries. But I wanted your money without the discomfort of admitting how much we depended on you.”
I did not tell her everything was forgiven.
I told her, “Thank you for saying it clearly.”
That was enough for that day.
Wesley took longer.
