Sloan watched through the passenger window.

For half a second, I thought she felt guilty.

Then she said, “He could’ve avoided all of that for $1,104.”

I looked at her.

“Actually, he could’ve avoided it by paying you every two weeks.”

“Also true.”

On Monday, Santiago finally changed tactics.

No excuses, no lectures about business, and no argument about whether Sloan had been an employee.

He sent, “I can pay the full amount today. Once I do, this is finished.”

Sloan showed me.

“What are you going to say?”

“I’ll accept the wages you owe me. That’s it.”

The payment came later that day.

$1,104.

Exactly what her spreadsheet said.

Sloan stared at the number for a few seconds.

After an entire summer of excuses, there it was.

No bonus.

No apology.

Just money she’d earned months earlier.

I expected her to celebrate. Instead, she took a screenshot and added it to the folder.

“Seriously?”

“What?”

“You finally got paid.”

“I know.”

“And your first reaction is to document it?”

She shrugged.

“I’ve developed trust issues.”
