The Cover-Up
“Thirty-two years ago,” Adrian finally said, “the Vale family was preparing one of the biggest business mergers in Boston history. My grandfather believed any scandal could destroy it. My aunt had fallen in love with a man he considered unacceptable — no wealth, no connections, someone he thought would embarrass the family name.”
“She ran away with him,” he went on. “Or that’s what everyone believed. She was actually found three weeks later — in a small town outside Boston. With no memory of who she was. A head injury, from an accident.”
The pieces started falling into place in my head, one after another. A woman with no past. A new name. A tiny dance studio. A daughter raised alone.
“No,” I whispered. “My mother knew who she was.”
“She knew the name Rose Bennett,” Adrian said gently. “She never knew she was Eleanor Vale’s missing daughter.”
I looked at Lucia, then back at him. “My mother spent her whole life believing she was nobody.”
“No,” Adrian said firmly. “She spent her whole life protecting herself from people who wanted her to believe that.”
That was when Celeste’s voice cut across the room.
“This is ridiculous.” Every head turned. “You expect everyone here to believe a server’s mother was secretly a Vale?”
Nobody laughed. Nobody moved. For the first time all evening, no one was looking at Celeste — they were looking at Adrian, at Eleanor, at me.
Adrian turned toward her slowly, and the temperature of the room seemed to drop.
“You knew,” he said.
Celeste froze. “What?”
“You knew exactly who Rose Bennett was. Before tonight.” He turned to the crowd. “The private investigator you hired found the truth three months ago.”
My breath disappeared. Celeste had known who we were the entire time — and she had still tried to destroy a six-year-old for sport. But why risk everything for that?
Then Adrian said the sentence that split the night wide open.
“Because Celeste wasn’t trying to embarrass Lucia. She was trying to make sure nobody ever discovered who Lucia’s father is.”
