Every instinct told him to turn around, confront Sarah, take Lily into his arms, and leave immediately.
A parent who discovers a child may be in danger wants to act visibly and at once.
Marcus had to force himself to do the opposite.
He had to walk calmly past the danger and temporarily leave his daughter behind while pretending nothing was wrong.
Every step felt like betrayal.
Some instinctive part of him insisted that a real father should not walk away from an endangered child, that he should storm into the kitchen, take Lily, and end everything there.

That walk would remain one of the hardest things he ever did.
Sometimes protecting someone looks, for an agonizing moment, exactly like leaving them.
Marcus walked away.
And then he came back for her, the way he always would.

He did not call the police first.
Even in those frantic minutes, Marcus understood that storming home with accusations supported only by his daughter’s whispered story might accomplish little except to warn Sarah and place Lily in the middle of a confrontation.
Before he made any visible move, he wanted proof.
Evidence gathered quietly.
