Evidence that could not easily be denied or destroyed.
He needed to know exactly what he was dealing with.
Ninety minutes later, Marcus was not at the airport.
He was not at the police station.
And he had not returned home.
He was sitting in front of a computer monitor in a quiet office, preparing to watch footage Sarah did not know still existed.
Chapter 9 — The Footage
Years earlier, after several break-ins in the neighborhood, a security technician named Ryan had installed part of the surveillance system in Marcus’s home.
Marcus was not asking Ryan to hack anyone’s private account or do anything improper.
He was simply asking to review cloud backups connected to a home network that Marcus himself paid for, owned, and managed.
It was his system, recording his home.
He had every right to see it.
Ryan opened several older automatically saved files.
At first, the first recording seemed insignificant.
Sarah was in the kitchen preparing breakfast while Lily sat at the island.
Then Sarah reached into the pocket of her sweater.
She removed a small glass bottle, tipped her hand over Lily’s glass of orange juice, and slipped the bottle away again in one quick, practiced motion.
Someone who was not specifically looking for it might have missed it completely.
“Play that again,” Marcus said, very softly.
Ryan replayed the recording.
Marcus watched his wife put something into his daughter’s drink in his own kitchen.
He did not speak.
He barely moved.
Something inside him that had been trusting, human, and married went permanently cold.
Later, he would rarely describe what watching that clip felt like.
Some things did not improve through retelling.
He simply asked Ryan to continue.
There was something about the way Marcus handled everything from that point forward that he later believed mattered almost as much as the evidence itself.
At no point did he choose the loud, emotionally satisfying response.
