The administrator started explaining that the transfer records needed to be reviewed, but I could barely process what he was saying.

A woman wearing a hospital gown stood in the doorway, gripping the armrests of a wheelchair. Her husband stood behind her with a bundled newborn in his arms.

“I told you something was wrong,” she said to him.

He appeared shaken.

Marissa turned her eyes toward me.

“I know.”

Denise walked toward them.

“Marissa, this is the other family I mentioned.”

Marissa looked directly at me.

Then she looked at the baby I was holding.

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

“My mom knitted a pink cap for her.”
