PART 3: THE TRUTH THAT TOOK THREE YEARS FROM US
My father stared at the photograph on his desk.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The room that had always represented power and control suddenly felt smaller than it ever had before.
The shelves filled with business awards, framed newspaper articles, and photographs of successful deals seemed meaningless.
All I could see was one picture.
My father standing beside Jenna’s hospital bed.
My father looking down at a newborn child who might have been my daughter.
A child I never knew existed.
Finally, Douglas Whitaker removed his glasses and placed them on the desk.
“Where did you get this?”
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because even now, after everything, his first concern was not the child.
Not Jenna.
Not me.
It was the source of the information.
“Why were you there?” I asked.
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
My father leaned back in his chair.
“Jenna contacted us after she discovered she was pregnant.”
The word “us” hit me immediately.
“Us?”
My father didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“You mean you and Mom?”
He nodded slightly.
I felt something inside me crack.
“She contacted my family before she contacted me?”
My father’s expression hardened.
“You were in the middle of finalizing the Avery partnership. Your position in the company was becoming more important. Your future was finally secure.”
I stared at him.
“My future?”
He continued as if he was explaining something obvious.
“You were about to marry into one of the most influential families in the region. There were hundreds of millions of dollars involved. One wrong decision could have affected thousands of people.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“My child was born.”
My father remained silent.
“My child was born, and you’re talking about contracts?”
“Nolan—”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to explain this like it was a business problem.”
For the first time, my father looked uncomfortable.
Madeline stepped forward.
„Czy moi rodzice wiedzieli?”
To pytanie zmieniło nastrój.
Mój ojciec spojrzał na nią.
Tylko na sekundę.
Ale ta sekunda wystarczyła.
Twarz Madeline posmutniała.
„Oni wiedzieli.”
