My parents eventually died.

My granddaughter went away to college in another state.

I traveled there to help her settle into her new home.

One morning, while she was attending classes, I decided to get coffee.

I walked into a busy café and joined the line.

I was simply reading the menu.

Then I heard a woman’s voice.

Something about it made me stop.

The rhythm.

The tone.

The way certain words were pronounced.

It sounded strangely familiar.

I looked up.

A woman was standing near the counter.

She had gray hair pulled back neatly.

She was about my height.

She had a familiar posture.

Then she turned.

I felt as though someone had pulled the floor out from underneath me.

Her face looked remarkably similar to mine.

The nose.

The eyes.
