The shape of her face.
It was like looking into a mirror from another lifetime.
Before I could stop myself, I whispered:
“Ella?”
The woman froze.
Tears appeared in her eyes.
But she shook her head.
“My name is Margaret.”
We stared at each other.
Neither of us knew what to say.
Eventually, we sat at a table.
Our hands were trembling as we held our coffee cups.
I told her my story.
I expected her to think I was confused.

When I finished, she was silent for several seconds.
Then she told me something that changed everything.
“I was adopted.”
I stared at her.
She explained that she had always known she was adopted, but her adoptive parents had refused to discuss her biological family.
Whenever she asked questions, they told her the records were unavailable.
They claimed the hospital where she had been born was gone and that the paperwork couldn’t be found.
For most of her life, Margaret had accepted that explanation.

She couldn’t be Ella.
We sat there trying to understand the resemblance.
Maybe it was coincidence.
