Marcus did not yet know exactly how the scheme was supposed to work.
But he understood its general shape.
Someone was creating a record suggesting his daughter was disturbed, difficult, perhaps unmanageable.
Someone wanted her removed from the home.
And someone appeared interested in the property she owned.
His six-year-old was not merely an obstacle standing between adults and an estate.
She was the target.

“Well,” Sarah said, warmly, looking down at the two of them.
“Looks like our little girl doesn’t want to let Daddy go.”
Marcus did one of the hardest things he had ever done.
He smiled back.
He stood slowly, kissed Lily on the forehead, and even leaned over to give Sarah a light kiss on the cheek, the ordinary goodbye of an ordinary husband leaving for an ordinary business trip.
“I’ll call you when I land,” he said.
His voice did not shake.
His expression revealed nothing.

And it understood one thing clearly.
Sarah could not know that he knew.
If she suspected for even a moment that Lily had spoken to him, she might destroy evidence, change her story, move money, or perhaps even take Lily somewhere.
Marcus’s only advantage was Sarah’s belief that everything remained hidden.
So he protected that advantage with the performance of his life.
He picked up his suitcase and walked through his own front door, past his smiling wife, leaving his daughter inside that house.
It was the most frightening thing he had ever done.
