The betrayal of her mother and brother had transformed her from a compliant high society daughter into a fiercely protective ally. I changed out of my damp clothes and pulled on a set of dark tactical gear from my deployment bag. DeAndre packed a specialized encrypted hard drive and a high speed document scanner into his sleek leather briefcase. We did not speak during the drive to the downtown financial district.
The silence in the car was thick with anticipation. We were transitioning from defensive maneuvers to a direct offensive strike against the enemy stronghold. The corporate headquarters of Derek’s brokerage firm occupied the top three floors of a towering glass skyscraper. At midnight, the financial district was a ghost town of concrete and shadows.

The keycard bypassed the standard floor selection entirely, activating a direct ascent to the top floor. The elevator doors slid open to reveal a sprawling, opulent reception area bathed in the dim glow of emergency lighting.
We moved silently down the plush carpeted hallway. Derek’s corner office sat behind a set of heavy frosted glass doors. I scanned the access pad, swiped the card, and we stepped inside. The office reeked of arrogant wealth, filled with expensive leather furniture and panoramic views of the city skyline.
